Happy Sunday, Hollow Mountain friends!
We are heading into our fourth week — I almost can’t believe it! So if you’ve been waiting to check out our workshops, this is the second-to-last week of our pilot, so be sure to bring your jackalope by and help us collect some meaningful data about what types of workshops (and for what age group!) our community is really leaning towards.
We’ve got TWO free for the whole family Behind-the-Scenes tours this week: First up is a BTS of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office led by Sheriff Kenny Furlong Tuesday, followed by a BTS of City Hall with Mayor Lori Bagwell.
New workshops this week are: our now >all-ages< improv-themed Wellness Group, Game Design for Kids & Teens, and Car Ownership 101 for teens!
Just as a quick reminder before we get to the schedule, the Hop & Mae Adams Foundation provided a generous donation to Hollow Mountain which has allowed us to provide (in addition to our scholarship fund!) TWO 50% off tickets for every regular-priced workshop through the pilot program! These are on a first-come, first-served basis, so register early to snag your $20 tickets.

Week Two Recap
We have been BUSY busy here at Hollow Mountain, and we’ve been gaining steam not just in our community, but on the airwaves as well! We were invited to showcase the Apocalypse Survival Workshop by KOLO 8, in which myself and Michelle had to be there at five in the morning, so the zombie-aspect was definitely on point.
Then, just a few days later, I was invited to talk about the program as a whole on KNVC Carson City Community Radio! Not at 5 a.m., which I definitely appreciated. You can listen to that interview below:
Inside our workshops ourselves, we kicked off the week with learning-by-playing with Color Theory! Our Kits got to mix colors through light boxes and flashlights before mixing real colors with (washable) paint! Then they were able to use their newfound color-mixing talents to paint their own white-petaled flowers to take home.
We had our first Creative Writing workshop of the pilot Tuesday, which fell on such a nice evening we just had to take it out to the courtyard! Jackalopes engaged in writing exercises in setting, character, archetypes and explored writing within confines.
On Saturday we welcomed the best future-babysitters in town to the Babysitting 101 workshop, which was followed by the best future-apocalypse survivors in town! Both groups were able to learn practical, hands-on skills — though arguably for very different circumstances.
The babysitters were able to learn about child-development stages and needs from newborns to running-jumping elementary schoolers, how to interview parents to establish schedules, safety guidelines and rules, how to care for an infant using a robotic doll, and were even able to get some real-life experience when they took it outside to play with Instructor Kendra’s own toddler (who seemed to absolutely love having five babysitters all to himself!)
In the apocalypse workshop, Michelle walked her Wasteland Survivors through the ins and outs of first-aid safety, including how to wrap splints for sprains, how to keep friends and family calm during an emergency, how much pressure to apply to a wound with a serious bleed, and of course — what to do if you ever get blood on you (zombie or otherwise).
If you weren’t able to come to this apocalypse workshop, we’ll be hosting another on May 30 — one for younger wastelanders (which will focus on much less scary aspects of the apocalypse) and one for the saem demographic of 10+. This workshop will include a brief review will occur on first aid, but will focus more on the nature survival aspects such as making fire, filtering water, and more.

Finally, we have a VERY exciting announcement in the works about a new project for our jackalope farmers thanks to an AMAZING donation from our friends at TruGreen Lawn Services!
We have been so blown away by the support the community has shown us, especially considering our pilot program is still only in its third week! (Though it feels like it’s been a LOT longer so far haha)
It has been so humbling and we are so incredibly grateful to everyone who has donated, or reached out asking how they can help or, most important of all: brought their kiddos for a workshop!
Keep your eyes and ears peeled for our exciting new project all thanks to TruGreen! Learn more about TruGreen lawn services here (like the fact they are responsible for keeping the Aces fields so green, how cool is that?!)
Week Three Workshop Schedule
Enough reminiscing, let’s take a look at what’s coming this week.

We know how difficult it can be to find mental health care at times (and prices) accessible to working families. That’s why our Wellness Workshops are always held in the evenings, and at the same flat-rate as our workshops, no insurance required. We have two on the books currently: an all-(big kid)ages Art-Therapy Themed Wellness Group on Mondays, and a Improv & Theater Themed Wellness Group for older elementary and up on Tuesdays on alternating weeks. Both are led by licensed therapists. Learn more by clicking on the image to the right!
As always: thank you!
Thank you for helping us on our mission to connect kids with their community and gain some cool skills and friends along the way! We couldn’t do it without you — and please, if you want to sign up but need some help covering costs, don’t hesitate to reach out. “It takes a village” doesn’t just mean keeping an eye on each other’s children at the park, or lending a hand when your neighbor is sick: it also means accepting support from others! We all benefit from living in a community where our children feel needed, safe and loved.
See you soon friends! And be sure to keep up to date with workshop offerings and new opportunities at hollowmountainworkshops.org
